August Subscription Services: Birchbox!

August 2015 Birchbox Review ~ The Wonky Brow

So this month was my first month with just ONE subscription box. And it was probably one of my most favorite boxes ever! But before I show you what I received, I want to let you know that this post will be shorter than usual because I am changing the format of how I write my subscription reviews. Instead of using the products for a week and reviewing them, I am going to show you everything I got this month and then NEXT month I will review this month's items so that I have more time to test them out. Then at the end of the review, I will show you what I received THAT month and it will be reviewed the following month... Get it? Good.

So here is what I got from my Birchbox!!!

August 2015 Birchbox Contents
Items received:
  1. Air Repair Complexion Boosting Moisturizer (Deluxe size- $2.40 Retail Value). Initial reaction: "Cool, I'll try it."

July One Month, One Palette: Laura Mercier Eye Art Artist's Palette

July One Month, One Palette ~ The Wonky Brow
It's time for one of my favorite posts again!!! It's July's One Month, One Palette update. I love doing this series because it really makes me use my eyeshadow palettes. I love palettes, I love buying palettes, and I seem to love storing palettes... Because unless I force myself, I will just use what I'm used to, instead of trying out all the different things I have.

So for July I chose to use Laura Mercier's Eye Art Artist's Palette. I chose this palette for one main reason, Dalen314 on YT (the creator of this series), used this palette back in May (check out her video, here) and she ended up not being a fan of it. So I wanted to used it and see if my view/opinion was different from hers. So let's get to it!

The Deets:
Just in case you don't know the story behind this palette, it was originally released during the holiday 2013 season as a limited edition palette. People raved and raved and raved about this palette, however, I still chose not to purchase it. But then Laura Mercier decided to bring it back AND make it permanent (as far as I know). So I finally caved and purchased it. They did change the packaging since the holiday edition and I have also seen some YT'ers comparing the old version to the new one (check out this review by Cora from Vintage or Tacky, here) to see if there are differences in formulation or application. This palette retails for $55 and you get 12 shadows in a variety of finishes. Also, the top half of the palette are cool tones and the bottom half are warm.

The Palette:
Laura Mercier's Eye Art Artist's Palette
The Shadows:
Let's start with what I loved. I loved how the shadows were separated with the top half being cool and the bottom being warm and how they were arranged from lightest to darkest. For whatever reason, it appeals to me visually when shadows are arranged that way. These shadows were great. They were creamy and blended well, they were easy to use, and I had no complaints about their functionality. My absolute least favorite shade was African Violet. No matter how I tried to use this color, it just didn't work for me. I also didn't really care for Bamboo. I just thought this color was so bland (is it just me?!?). My standouts from this palette were Vanilla Nuts, Guava, and Fresco. OMG, Fresco. I loved that shade. It's the perfect crease/transition shade. All that being said......

Close up look at Vanilla Nuts, Guava, and Fresco from Laura Mercier's Eye Art Artist's Palette

The Conclusion:
I may be in the minority, but this palette bored me to death. I have brown eyes, and so I thought this would be a great palette for me. But I just didn't love the purple shades in here and so I never really used them. And if you aren't going to use the purples, then this is just another neutral palette. And I have enough neutral palettes... I really just got bored this month (so bored that I started using the palette I chose for August a week early). Luckily, if I find that I can't live without the three shadows I enjoyed most, they can all be purchased individually. But the truth of the matter is, they are all shades you can find in almost any eyeshadow line and I'm sure I won't be needing them. Now don't get me wrong... I still love Laura Mercier products. And if you don't own a ton of neutral eyeshadows, or a ton of eye shadow palettes, you might love this palette and it may be all you need. But seeing as I am an avid makeup collector and have other things like this... This palette is going to be returned.

Have you used this palette? What were your thoughts?? Let me know!!!

Product Spotlight: Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs

Product Spotlight: Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs ~ The Wonky Brow
Happy Monday!!! Today I want to talk to you all about one of my favorite products EVER. I had planned on doing a post about this product, and thennnnn... Influenster added me to the Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs VirtualVox (similar to a voxbox except they don't send a box filled with goodies and all activities are completed virtually- hence the name). And I just thought "perfect timing". So, random coincidence aside... I love these products. And I'm not getting paid to say that.

I have been using the Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs for a couple years now (thanks to my bestie, who introduced me to this awesomeness-in-a-can) and the best thing I can say about it is... It's so simple. It's literally, makeup for your legs and it will help camouflage any imperfections! There are two ways/times when I use this:
  1. When I have a spray tan. Sounds redundant? It's not. For those who have spray tanned before, you may know... For whatever reason, your legs will sometimes not get as dark as the rest of you (I don't know why, but this happens to me almost every time). So before going out for the night, I will spray my legs with the Tan or Medium shade so that I don't have an ombré skin effect gong on. This stuff will also help even out the look of a spray tan if you look a little patchy. (Side note- I have also used this on my arms and it works well for that too).
  2. When I have not spray tanned and want to wear shorts. Mind you, my natural skintone is translucent (no joke). So that is when I will use the Light shade. It gives me just enough color so that I don't look like I just arose from the coffin.
I will admit, the first time I saw this stuff I was terrified. I was worried I would look like an oompa loompa mixed with a zebra. So, my bestie went first and showed me what to do. Shake the can. Spray your legs (from upper thigh to ankle) so that you have 6-8 spots, and then rub it in until blended! (Remember to do your feet too if you will be wearing sandals or flip-flops). That simple. Do one leg at a time, and wash your hands after each leg. Give it a few minutes to dry/set in. Voilà!

This product claims to be water and transfer resistant, and I will completely agree with that. But it's not waterproof, so if you are getting in the water... Don't bother with this stuff. If you will be staying dry, it will last and last and last. Also, I have worn white shorts with this on my legs. Yes I dared. And while it did rub off a little on the shorts, it also washed out easily in the laundry and nothing was destroyed. One last thing, this does have a sparkle to it that will be noticeable if you are out in the sun. It was originally created to mimic panty-hose, and it does just that. Personally, I like to sparkle (not Edward Cullen sparkle, but a little glitter never hurt anyone).

If you want to try this out for yourself, click HERE for $2 off. Plus CVS has $5 Extracare Bucks when you spend $10 on Sally Hansen products until 8/1/15. Also, if you haven't already joined Influenster, you should. It's free and all you have to do is link one of your social media accounts. You will then have the chance to participate in campaigns (like this one) and earn prizes. Check it out, HERE. xoxoxo.

June One Month, One Palette: Too Faced Natural at Night & Natural Matte

June's One Month, One Palette ~ The Wonky Brow
Okayyyyy, Okayyyyy... I cheated again. I used two palettes this month. But it was soooooo worth it. I planned on using only the Too Faced Natural at Night palette for the month of June. But when the first of the month rolled around and I opened it up, I was like "Uhhhhhh... I need more." And so then what had happened wasssss... It was my birthday and the boyfriend got me a gift card to Ulta. So I purchased the Too Faced Natural Matte palette to use as a companion. #sorrynotsorry.

The Deets:
Both of these palettes retail for $36, however, the Natural at Night (NaN) palette is not available at the moment. I am unsure as to whether they are simply repackaging this into the newer tin case they use (like they have done for some of the other palettes in this range) or if it is simply discontinued. I sincerely hope it isn't the latter. Each palette contains nine shadows. Of those nine, the NaN palette only contains two matte shades. Hence, my "Uhhhhhh... I need more" statement. I like shimmer, but I like balance also. As for the Natural Matte (NM) palette, all I can say is... LOVE.
The Palette(s):
Too Faced Natural Matte and Natural at Night Palettes
The Shadows:
I used all of these shadows in a combination of looks this month. The formula is great. Soft, blendable, easy to work with. My only complaint formula-wise is shade-specific, the Night Light shade from the NaN palette. It is a beautiful shimmery pink, but it has large chunks of glitter that make this shadow excessively powdery and can create some fall out on the lid. Another great thing about the NaN palette is the colors of the shadows. The only one I didn't care for is the shade Nightcap. Something about that brown just makes me think of poop. I don't know why. But it is a "blah" shade for me. My favorites from this palette were After-hours, Moonstone, and Eclipse. I found all three extremely hard to find dupes for also. In fact the only dupe I found in my collection was for After-hours, which is the shade Taupe Platinum (D-562) from the Makeup Forever Artist Shadow range. My favorites from the NM palette are ALLLLL OF THEM. But if I absolutely have to choose... It's Strapless, Honey Butter, and Chocolate Cookie. Again it was hard for me to find exact dupes of these in my collection. The only one I got close on was Honey Butter which is similar to M.A.C.'s Bamboo.
Night Light from Too Faced's Natural at Night Palette
Left: Top- Too Faced After Hours
Bottom- Makeup Forever Taupe Platinum
Right: Top- Too Faced Honey Butter
Bottom- M.A.C. Bamboo
The Conclusion:
I am a fan. I am a fan of Too Faced. And I am a fan of these small palettes they conjure up. I love their eyeshadow formula and the shades they create. I would repurchase both of these palettes in a heartbeat if I needed to (I obviously don't and have enough eyeshadow to last a hundred lifetimes). I really hope they come back out with the NaN palette repackaged. Some of those shades are just beautiful.  As for the NM palette. GO. BUY. IT. NOW.!. Seriously, GO!!! I haven't felt this strongly about an eyeshadow palette since the original Urban Decay Naked palette. This palette is simply matte-perfection. If you have been hesitating about purchasing this, don't, it's worth it. I will continue to use this palette on a daily basis. If I had to choose between this one or the Urban Decay Naked Basics (1 or 2), I'd choose the Too Faced. Hands down. Every time. No questions asked. End rant.
My favorite look I created with these palettes. Plus it's the eyeshadow look I used for my birthday!!!
Have you used either of these palettes? Let me know!!! xoxoxo

Product Spotlight: Adovia Dead Sea Salt Scrub

Product Spotlight: Adovia Dead Sea Salt Scrub
Happy Saturday Everyone!!! As you are reading this I am driving the three hours to SoFlo to drop my son off with my dad for the week. He is super excited. I'm sick of driving... (This is my third trip down in the last week. Long story. Life happens.)

Today I am going to review a new body scrub I tried. If you follow me on IG, you may know that I am on the hunt for the perfect body scrub. The way I like to use a body scrub is before I shave so that my legs are well exfoliated and I get a closer/better shave. Unfortunately many of the scrubs I've tried have oils in them for a moisturizing effect... Which is nice if you are scrubbing just to scrub, but not if you plan on shaving afterwards. The oils tend to gunk up the razor.

Enter Adovia Dead Sea Salt Scrub in Ocean Breeze...

I was excited to try out another scrub to see if I had found my "holy grail" yet... But as I opened the package, I realized that this was yet another "oily" scrub that would not work the way I prefer. I still tested it out to see how it compared to others I've used and this is what I found:
Pros:
  • Packaging. This sucker was sealed EXTREMELY well. Which is good because there is an oily, liquidy layer that tends to rise to the top. Nothing leaked out at all. In fact, I had a hard time breaking the plastic seal off to use the scrub!!!
  • Grittiness. Because this is a salt scrub, there is a decent amount of grit for exfoliation, which I like. The grittier, the better... In my opinion. But it also dissolves easily as you use it.
  • No shower residue. While this scrub does leave an oily residue on the skin, it does not leave an oily residue on my shower flower. BONUS POINTS for that!!!
  • Made in Israel. I mean, obviously... It is a DEAD SEA SALT SCRUB. Regardless, it's a "pro" for me.
  • Accessibility. You don't even have to leave your house to get your hands on this... Just order from Amazon! (Check it out here!)
Cons:
  • The scent. I am not a fan of the fragrance used in this scrub. There is a hint of "old lady" that hangs around while you use it. I disagree with the label "Ocean Breeze".
  • The oily skin effect. Now this is a con for me, personally. Others may love the fact that this is a moisturizing exfoliator. Especially if you suffer from extremely dry skin and need that added layer of hydration for your skin. It's just not for me. At least not in the shower.
  • Price. When I ordered this, it was $19.00. Right now, however, you can order it from Amazon for $15.95. That's still a pretty pricey scrub for something that isn't a household name...
  • Accessibility. You can't find this in stores, you have to order it online. Which means you can't test it out first.

Overall, I was glad to test this product out. It's a good scrub. And while it didn't quite fit the need I have for a shower exfoliator, I will still be able to use and enjoy this scrub. It will work better for me as a hand scrub, and I'll use it anytime I give myself (or anyone else) a manicure. If you enjoy body scrubs that exfoliate well AND leave your skin feeling nice and hydrated, this one is worth a shot!

May One Month, One Palette: Lorac Pro

May's One Month, One Palette ~ The Wonky Brow
This month I chose to (FINALLY) use my Lorac Pro palette. I have had this baby for a loooooooong time. And I hadn't touched it. Like at all. So I was really excited to dive into this palette and see what my thoughts were and if it was AS good as so many people swear it is...

The Deets:
This palette retails for $42 and you can find it at Ulta, Kohl's, and Beauty.com. It contains 16 warm, neutral shadows. 8 are shimmery and 8 are matte. If you are looking for a palette that contains everything you need from a neutral daytime look to a dramatic smoky eye, this is your palette. You won't need much else.

The Palette:
Lorac Pro Palette

The Shadows:
I used all but two shades in this palette, Black and White. For the matte shades I absolutely LOVE Mauve. I like using this shade in the crease because it's not your typically brown, it's a muted plum with a hint of pink to it. It's different and I like it. (The closest shade in my collection that I could find was MakeupGeek's Unexpected.) The other matte color I used consistently was Cream. Perfect brow bone color. As for the shimmery shades... I love them all. But since we are picking favorites here... I'd have to say Champagne- a great lid color that is similar to Urban Decay's Sin, Pewter- used on the lid and the outer corner, and Garnet- used in the outer corner and above my crease color to warm up a look. Pewter and Garnet are very interesting shades and were tricky for me to find dupes for. In fact, there is nothing in my collection that is similar to Garnet because it's shimmery and has a red-brown undertone. Most of the shadows I have with that type of undertone are matte. And Pewter, I thought I had tons of... But I only found one shade in the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette, Mugshot, that was really similar, but it's still not quite the same. Mugshot is a touch lighter and reflects more when the light hits it.
Top to Bottom: Lorac Mauve, Urban Decay Nooner, Makeup Geek Unexpected, MAC Haux
Top to Bottom: Lorac Champagne, Urban Decay Sin, Lorac Garnet
Top: Lorac Pewter
Bottom: Urban Decay Mugshot
The Conclusion:
This is definitely a palette I would recommend to anyone. Whether you are a makeup junkie like me... Or you just want one palette that can be used all the time, for work or a night out. You can create a variety of looks since there is such an assortment of colors. The shadows are soft and buttery and easily blendable. The only cons are that certain shades will kick up a lot of powder when you put your brush in it or they will have some fall out when placed on your eyes and the packaging gets dirty quickly. But like I've told you before, dirty packaging doesn't bother me. It means I'm using the product! As for the fact that some people love these shadows and say they are better than most others... I'd disagree. They are amazing shadows but I still prefer the formula of Urban Decay shadows to Lorac's. But that's just my personal preference!
What do you think??? Let me know!!!

Monthly Empties: May 2015 #365DaysOfEmpties

Monthly Empties: May 2015
Guess what today is!?!?!?! The last day of school for the kiddos!!! Guess what else today is!?!?!?! It's my BIRTHDAY! Yep, it's the 11th Anniversary of my 21st Birthday. ;-) But guess what ELSE today is!?!?!?! It's Empties Day!!!!!! Check 'em out below:

  • Product(s) I will miss the most: I really liked the Sephora Nano Lip Liner in Native Nude (#121). But it looks like they reformulated/repackaged these lip liners (and increased the price from $5 to $6) and they no longer carry this shade. Also, the Color Club Nail Polish in London Calling (#131). This shade was a Birchbox exclusive I received the first time I was subscribed to them about two years ago. It's an amazing neon green. But you can only purchase it from the Birchbox shop in a four pack with three other colors, and I'm just not interested.
  • Product(s) I cannot live/survive/breathe without and have already repurchased: The Body Shop Pink Grapefruit Shower Gel (#150). O.M.G. This is one of the MOST refreshingly scented body washes I have ever, I mean EVER, used. I love it. It literally wakes me up in the morning. I have the larger bottle waiting to be used...
  • Product(s) that will eventually be repurchased: Honestly, nothing in this batch sticks out to me. Possibly Benefit's Porefessional (#146)... IF I ever used up all 832 other primer samples I have. Also, the Bath and Body Works Wallflowers (#128-130). Though they really aren't impressing me and I might have to switch to something else once I use up what I have. Any suggestions???
  • Sample(s) that made me want the full size: The Perfectly Posh BFF Best Face Forever Exfoliating Fash Wash, MFEO Mint For Each Other Body Scrub, and The Stripper Detox Body Mud (#151). These samples seriously piqued my interest. The Mint Scrub had such a good scent and was just the right amount of gritty for me. The Stripper Mask, ohhhhh that mask... It tingles. And we aren't talking "GlamGlow" tingle... It's a legit burning sensation. So if you have sensitive skin, skip this, it's not for you. But if you can handle the burn, try this stuff out. My skin felt squeaky clean after using it and I definitely think it helped pull some impurities to the surface. And the Klorane Smoothing and Relaxing Patches (#137). I really enjoyed these. I don't know that they made a difference in brightening my under eye area, but they definitely soothed, softened, moisturized, and refreshed. I really enjoyed these.
  • Product(s) that disappointed me the most: The L'Occitane Amande Supple Skin Oil (#125). Yup, I said it. I do not like L'Occitane. But not because their products aren't good. But because I CANNOT STAND THE WAY THEY SMELL. ErrrrMaaaaGerrrrrd. It's so bad. I can't do it. And the worst part is, everything, I mean EVERYTHING else about this oil was amazing. It absorbed so well into the skin. It didn't leave a greasy residue. It made my skin feel amazingly soft. It was soooooo good. Except I smelled like the granny who still perms her hair, has a house full of moth balls, and always tries to feed you stale cookies. IJS. So disappointing. Also, Essie's Romper Room (#139) One of the worst formulations of Essie polish I have tried. But a great color. Too bad.
  • Product you couldn't pay me to (re)purchase. EVER.: Cotton Balls (#147). Any cotton ball. The fuzz they leave behind makes me angry. Seriously. It's so infuriating when trying to polish your nails and you constantly have to pull little "fuzzies" out of the polish. No More. I refuse.
So that was my May Round Up for you guys. Have you had any similar experiences? Let me know! Don't forget to follow me on Instagram for daily updates on my #365DaysOfEmpties and sooooo much more! Also, don't forget to enter my Giveaway for reaching 500+ followers on IG! Check it out here!

April One Month, One Palette: BareMinerals

One Month, One Palette: April 2015
BareMinerals Ready Eyeshadow 4.0
This month I did things a little differently... Instead of using a palette with 10+ eyeshadows, I chose to use all four five (I'll explain) of my Bare Minerals Ready Eyeshadow 4.0 quads. I know it's called One Month, One PALETTE... But the ultimate goal is to USE what I have, give different items a chance, and decide if it's worth keeping. And these were demanding their shot.

The Deets:
These retail for $30 each and you can find them at Ulta, Sephora, and Beauty.com. The first quad I purchased was The Happy Place, thanks to a tutorial I watched on YouTube. And I fell in love with the shadows. My mom had asked me what I was wearing and when I told her she gave me a quad she had and wasn't using,The Dream Sequence. And it was all down hill from there... When I started the project this month I only had four quads. BUTTTT... Ulta had them on sale 1/2 off during their 21 Days of Beauty. So I did the opposite of what reason and logic told me to do, and I bought one more, The Truth.

The Quads:
BareMinerals Ready Eyeshaow 4.0 (clockwise from top) in The Soundtrack, The Happy Place, The Designer Label,
The Truth, and The Dream Sequence.
BareMinerals Ready Eyeshaow 4.0 (clockwise from top) in The Soundtrack, The Happy Place, The Designer Label,
The Truth, and The Dream Sequence.

The Shadows:
There were a couple shadows that I loved so much they spoke to my soul. Two of which I could not find dupes for in my collections. Not to say they aren't out there, I just don't own them. Shockingly. Those two shades are Romp from The Dream Sequence and Magnetism from The Truth. As for the others that I loved, I was able to find similar shadows in my MAC collection:
Right W/Flash. Left W/out Flash.
Shadows in order:
Remix (BM The Soundtrack)
Goldmine (MAC)
Louder (BM The Soundtrack)
Amber Lights (MAC)
Imagine (BM The Happy Place)
Expensive Pink (MAC)
Euphoria (BM The Happy Place)
Twinks (MAC)
The Conclusion:
These shadows are amazing. They are soft and buttery. They don't kick up a ton of powder, wasting product. They blend amazingly well. They are pigmented. And they last. Even when outdoors, in the hot sun, sweating for hours... My shadow didn't budge. The packaging is slim and portable. You could carry these around in your purse (though you don't need to with how well they perform) without a worry about damaging them. However, they are made of that type of rubbery plastic that tends to attract scratches and smudges. So if you are a stickler for keeping you products looking immaculate, this might bother you. Personally, I like when my products look a little worn... It means I like them AND use them! Other than that I have nothing negative to say about these. I love and recommend them. Go get you some! Xoxoxo.

YSL VoxBox!

Yes, you read that correctly... YSL! Influenster recently sent me their "most iconic VoxBox yet", which contained a full size Yves Saint Laurent Volume Effet Faux Cils Mascara. (Do I need to tell you how excited I was?!?!?!)

*Random FYI: Influenster is an online community where members can give their honest opinions on goods and services. Once you join you can take quizzes, give reviews, and ask/answer questions about products or services. Once in a while Influenster will send you a survey based on your interests to see if you qualify for a "VoxBox". These can be virtual where you simply complete tasks online, or they may send you items to test out for FREE. If you're interested, click HERE to join!

Apparently it's the 15th anniversary of this mascara so YSL decided to re-release the original formula and Influenster shipped out 4,000 of these babies for members to test out and review!!!
Let's start with the basics... This mascara comes in six shades (mine is High Intensity Black) including two different shades of blue, violet, and burgundy. It retails for $32 and you can purchase it here, here or here (or anywhere that sells YSL beauty products).
The claims (straight from YSL's website)...: NEW improved formula does not dry out. The best gets even better, the original false lash effect mascara, now with an all new Lash Care formula. Achieve absolute dramatic lashes in a single stroke for eyes that instantly pop. Its secret is the Triple-Intensity Formula: intense volume, intense color and now intense care. The nylon fiber brush coats each lash in deep color and maximum volume from root to tip, while B5 Pro-Vitamin strengthens and protects lashes. Available in 6 signature YSL shades to compliment eye color or to create a customized look.

YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils Mascara in High Intensity Black
Nylon Fiber Brush
So how did it work and how did I like it??? OMG. It was LOVE at first use!!!
I cannot attest to wether or not the formula doesn't dry out, since I've only been using it a couple weeks... But the claim "dramatic lashes in a single stroke", ummmmmm... YES. Though I still did two coats, I didn't need to. The brush seems to grip even the tiniest lashes and coats them well. And the length that it gives is just unreal. See for yourself:
Top Left: No Mascara.
Top Right: One coat of YSL Volume Effet (top lashes only).
Bottom: Two coats of YSL Volume Effet (top and bottom lashes).
Personally, I have a problem with mascara transferring under my eyes. EVERY single mascara I have ever tried has done this. So I can't detract from this one for doing the same. However, if I top it with one coat of waterproof mascara, that helps. Also, your lashes don't feel hard and crispy once they dry.  The packaging is beautiful and reminds you that you are using a "luxury mascara". Oh! And the scent! This mascara has a really nice scent to it. Not that you can smell it once it's on your lashes... Or that it's even important... But when you open the tube to apply it, there's a really pleasant scent.
There isn't too much more I can say about this mascara. I think the picture above speaks for itself... But I do believe there is a new addiction in my future... Have you tried this mascara? Did you receive it from Influenster? What are your thoughts? Let me know!!! Xoxoxo

P.S. I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes. All opinions are honest and my own. I was not paid by Influenster/YSL to write this blog post.
